A Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a computer system used to capture, manipulate, and display geographic information. GIS tasks that can be performed include feature buffering, overlay analysis, location analysis, creating continuous density maps from point data, visual impact assessment, and routing applications such as shortest distance calculations and creating drive time service areas. Software applications can be made for special tasks such as, using spatial analysis to resolve work crew scheduling conflicts or determining allocation of services by council district.
